Different organizations undertake various projects aiming at achieving growth and realizing the goals that were set. To perform a particular project successfully, it is important to consult all stakeholders. This ensures that all stages involved in the project are discussed in detail, and agreement is realized through the tasks that were carefully planned from the very beginning till the completion of the project. One of the most important stages in a project is its design as it generally involves the creation of a plan which will be used as a basis for system or object construction. The design has different meanings in different design disciplines. The main focus of this paper is to review and discuss a tape measure that is emblematic or symbolic of my design discipline. In this case, the chosen design discipline is architecture.

A tape measure is an important tool frequently used in measurement. This method ensures that the project designer prepares the design which is reasonably accurate according to the measurements. The main reason to focus on tape measure relates to its key contribution in various projects over many years. Considering the fact that measurement is an important aspect in creating designs, the tape measure is always used to guarantee that right measurements are implemented to craft particular designs. It is not possible to involve measurement, especially in architecture, without involving tape measure. It is essential for various stages of project construction to provide accuracy, which is important in creating a high quality project. The tape measure is suitable for measuring small lengths because it is capable of measuring to approximately 0.79375 mm. Additionally, it can be applied to survey extended lengths because it is available in different sizes, for example, one, two, ten, thirty, and fifty meters.

Qualities of Tape Measure

A tape measure has several qualities, including the nail and screw grab, serrated scribing tool and true zero hook feature, which is particularly useful for architecture as a design discipline. Due to the nail and screw grab, this instrument enables workers to measure a set of points without necessarily requiring anyone elses help. It can be also used to measure an extended length where the end of the tape measure must be placed at one side. For instance, to assure that the accurate measurement is obtained when checking the length between point A and B, one must be carefully control the end of the point A. To be certain that the end of the tool is correctly placed at point A, the tape measure has previously mentioned nail and screw grab that help to hook one end of the tape measure into a specific point and make a measurement accurately. This virtually eliminates the need to have someone to help hold the end of the tape measure while taking a measurement. Furthermore, it enables to realize the most accurate measurement.

Another important quality of the tape measure is serrated scribing tool. When making measurements, it is important to put some markings. To make these markings, one may require a pencil, a pen, or any other maker. The serrated scribing tool implemented into the tape measure helps one to place markers by pressing serrated bottom edge into the work piece. Once it is pressed into the work piece, one can make a mark by scratching it back and forth. This means that while using the tape measure, one does not require such tools as pencils in order to make marks on the work piece. In architecture different pieces of materials are used in creating a design. Thus, a tape measure can be a good practice when making measurements and placing marks on those materials.

Nail grab is another important feature of a tape measure which is especially helpful in scribing a circle. When crafting designs for various projects, one is supposed to make different shapes, including a triangle, a circle, and a square. The slot in the grab can be easily turned on a nail. This indicates that it may be as applicable for the center-point when inscribing a circle. By holding the end hook grab on the screw head and a marker, say, a pencil, one can scribe against the end of the tape measure to protract a circle at a necessary radius.

The tool under analysis has true zero hook features that are important in ensuring the accuracy of the measurement. Additionally, it has riveted metal tab that holds the end hook of the tape. To ensure that the tape measure records the correct measurement, the inch mark starts at 1/16 short because the width of the hook is 1/16?. This means that by pressing the hook against the work piece being measured, one will obtain the right measurement.

History of Tape Measure and Use

In ancient times, the Romans used the tape measure as a basic measuring device. They preferred a marked stripe of leather, so that the initial tape measure resembled a regular ruler. In the year 1868, Alvin J. Fellows filed a patent. This was the first effort to create a spring tape measure. In the year 1919, Hiram A. Farrand filed a patent for his spring tape measure and received it in the year 1922. With the help of The Brown Company, Farrand conducted multiple experiments in 1926, and concentrated on mass-production of the tape measure afterwards.

This tool is useful in measuring both vertical and horizontal distance. Tape measure has different usages in different activities. For instance, in sewing, the tape measure is used to adjust the fabric before cutting it to fit the specific design. In carpentry, the tape measure is applied when it comes to measuring the materials to be used in producing different items. In the survey, it is commonly practiced to check distances from one point to another. In architecture, the tape measure is widely used for creating designs for various projects and for measuring lengths during construction process.

Materials Used to Make Tape Measure

The tape measure is made of different materials, including linen, metal, steel, and Invar. The type of material necessary for making the tape measure highly depends on its specific use. Linen fabric, for instance, is made using linen cloth. This is convenient for the fact it is produced in such a way that it can withstand wearing.

Metallic tape is made using copper wire with the aim of reinforcing it to prevent twisting and stretching of fibers. In all probability a tape measure is available in any length, but it is commonly accessible in 20 m and 30 m.

The steel tape is made with the help of steel ribbon of the length ranging from 6mm to 16mm. This tape measure is available in the lengths of one, two, ten, thirty, and also fifty meters. It should be handled with care because it cannot withstand rough usage.

Inver tape is made using an alloy of nickel and steel in proportions of 36% and 64% respectively. This tape measure has a width of 6mm, and it is available in lengths of 30m, 50m, and 100m. It should be handled even with greater care as it is costly and very delicate.

Meaning of Tape Measure

The importance of the tape measure in design, particularly in architecture as a design discipline cannot be overemphasized. This versatile tool is frequently associated with accuracy in measurement. Through the use of the tape measure, one can achieve an accurate design of a particular project. The design is a stage of paramount importance in preparing of every project, as it is used as a point of reference when undertaking the actual project. Thus, by maintaining the accuracy during this phase; it is possible to prevent errors during the construction process. This significantly improves the quality of the end product. Thus, the tape measure means creating the accurate and reliable design according to the requirements.

This vital for architecture instrument is an essential part of design in the work. It is applied to measure the materials to be used during the implementation of the project. Once one has decided to prepare a certain project, the tape measure is used to make various parts aiming at production of the desirable end product. Considering how the tape measure is produced, one can clearly understand that it is made due to the very specific design that focuses on attaining the accuracy in measurement. Furthermore, availability of various features, including screw grab, serrated scribing tool, nail grab, and true zero hook feature means that a tape measure may be widely used when creating designs.

A tape measure can be regarded as a part of a product, considering the fact that it is used from the design stage of the project, during construction and after completion of the project. However, the tape measure is not a component of the end product. Thus, it cannot be considered as an inalienable part of the larger system.

In conclusion, there are some objects or tools which are symbolic of specific design disciplines. The tape measure is one of those tools, which are particularly important for architecture as a design discipline. The main reason that makes a tape measure such a crucial element of this sphere relates to maintaining accuracy in measurements.
