Introduction of the Brain
The brain is one of the most significant and complex organs in the body. It comprises of billions of nerves that communicate in connections called synapses. The brain also has specialized cells that help it work efficiently. These brain’s areas are the outermost layer of the brain known as the cortex. The cortex is where voluntary movement and thinking start. There is also the brain stem that controls sleeping and breathing. Another specialized area of the brain is the cerebellum that is responsible for balancing and coordinating different parts of the body.
At the center of the brain, there are cluster structures called basal ganglia that correlate messages in the brain. The brain is also divided into different lobes that are parietal, occipital, temporal, and frontal. Meninges are the layers of tissue that surrounds the brain. The cranium or the skull is the outermost part that protects the brain from injury. The terms left brain and right brain are used to differentiate two parts of the brain. This paper will discuss the left vs. the right part of the brain and how they impact learning.
Complexity of the Brain
According to the recent researches, one’s brain has more molecular-scale switches than all routers, computers and internet connections in the entire world. Scientists have said that a person’s brain complexity is beyond what they have imagined. They have estimated that the cortex alone has more than 125 trillion synapses. Therefore, it will take many years for scientists to study the human brain fully. Most of them have said that it is not possible to do research and fully understand how human brain works due to its complexity.
How One Side of the Brain Impacts Retaining Information?
Damage to one side of the brain has an impact on the opposite part of the body. For instance, if a person suffers a stroke that damaged the left side of the brain, one will have problems with the right side of one’s body. On the other hand, if the brain's right side is damaged, the body experiences problems on its left side. There are claims that if the left brain is damaged, a person will have difficulties in producing language, an issue that is called aphasia (Kenneth & Westerhausen, 2010).

The left side of the brain is considered to be better in tasks that involve language, analytical thinking, and logic. Moreover, this part of the brain is also found to be more effective in numbers, reasoning, and critical thinking.
People, who use their left part of the brain in thinking process, analyze information and also put things in chronological order. When they have an idea, they will process it before dividing the whole idea into different sections. Left-brained people are considered as logical thinkers because they look at things or an issue in detail before they figure out the whole picture (Kenneth & Westerhausen, 2010). The right side of the body is controlled by the left brain. These people rarely use body movements or hand gestures to express information. They are also slow in decision making.
However, their analytical and logical minds ensure that they have fully analyzed the information. They like to focus most on symbols, numbers, and words. Therefore, they like learning anything that is detailed, factual, scientific, precise and mathematical. The great discoveries in the world are known to be made by left-brain people because they are practical, organized and strategic in nature.
Left-brained students can be successful academically if they learn everything in an orderly and structured way (Connell, 2013). They thrive well in a planned environment, and they prefer working on a well-defined assignment rather than open-end questions. They can spend many hours making details of something. They are not free speakers, and they do not enjoy working in groups. For this type of people to study well, there should be no distraction and noise. Also, left-brained people tend to use their right hands often because the left brain controls the right side of the body.
Right Brain Functions
The right side of the brain is the best for creativity and expressing emotions. Those people who use right brain are good at music, colors, images, reading emotions and recognizing facts.
Right-brained people are non-verbal and intuitive. They like to use pictures rather than words when they are illustrating something. The best explanation for this is to listen to the right-brained people when they are giving direction. They are likely to use their hands when they are giving instructions. They use body movements and gestures because they are not good in words; therefore, they use gestures to emphasize what they are saying.
Another function of the right brain is to control the left part of a person’s body. People, who are right-brained, work more using their left hand. In addition, they tend to move their left feet first when they are walking.
Moreover, people who are right-brained prefer acting instinctively (Connell, 2013). They do not bother thinking about the logic. Most of them think outside the box as they like to think in their ways. Therefore, right-brained people are more creative than left-brained ones. These people view things in a holistic way and do not pay attention to the finer details. They can understand the bigger picture and also larger meaning of things.
How right and left brain affect one another, which is more effective?
According to Martin, Guare and Dawson (2010), both the left brain and right brain are dependent on each other. There is no evidence to prove that one part of the brain is superior to the other. A good example to illustrate this point is when a person is having a conversation. The left part of the brain will focus on the words spoken while the right part will be focusing on understanding the message. However, those people who think mostly using their left brain have their advantages over the people who use their right brain.
